Adelaide has a population of over one million people, many of them have and use their bicycles to get to work as well as for leisure and exercise. Several initiatives are underway to make Adelaide one of the top bicycle friendly cities in the world. Cycle tourism has proven to be both popular and lucrative throughout the world and Adelaide is determined to become a key cycling tourism destination.
Local leisure cyclists, commuters and tourists will benefit from more open and welcoming access to rail transport in South Australia. Currently cyclists can only access the Belair train outside of peak hours and often only two bikes are allowed on the train at a time (even when the train appears empty). Allowing cyclists better access to rail transport will assist in making South Australia a Mecca for mountain bike tourism whilst reducing the number of bikes on the treacherous roads leading to the hills south of Adelaide.
This petition will be delivered to the CEO of the Department of transport and Infrastructure and will be copied to the five State Government ministers with related portfolios.
We, the undersigned, call on the South Australian Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure to include a bicycle specific carriage to the Belair train line, to provide free transport of bicycles, all hours, (when accompanied by a fare paying passenger) from Adelaide city to Belair and all the stations in between.
