Our community will benefit greatly by allowing more residents to keep backyard chickens, and we have a solution that will accomplish this while keeping neighbors happy. The current city code, requiring a 50 foot coop/enclosure setback from all neighboring properties, only allows for approximately 20% of Bloomington homeowners to legally keep chickens. We believe this restriction is undue and should be lifted. These animals are not only docile, quiet, and non-violent, but they offer companionship, provide a nutritious food source with fresh eggs daily, and are a natural solution for integrated pest management. Adults and children alike will benefit from the responsibility and satisfaction that keeping their own backyard flock of chickens provides.
We, the undersigned residents of Bloomington, MN, urge the city manager and councilmembers to change the city code regarding keeping backyard chickens to the following:
1. Residents who receive signed consent from 75% of all neighboring properties within 100 feet may bypass the 50 foot setback requirement for chicken enclosures and may keep up to 6 hens in an enclosure on their property.
