In 2012 it was decided that in the Windsor area there would not be any Living Green Ribbon event. The reason given? "We feel it takes away from the message." The last one was in 2011 and I thought that was the one that reached the most people! I was surprised when they said there would be no more.
This is disappointing considering the reason the Living Green Ribbon was started in the first place was to involve the community in its attempt to raise awareness of the desperate need for organ and tissue donors. (as stated on page 6 of http://www.kidney.ca/Document.Doc?id=367)
On http://www.kidney.ca/page.aspx?pid=540 it says:
A flagship event in Ontario, normally held during National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week, the Living Green Ribbon is an annual photo shoot where people become part of a living tableau – a giant green ribbon - the internationally recognized symbol of organ and tissue donation. By using people to form the ribbon shape, it symbolizes the life-giving and life-enhancing affects of organ and tissue donation. Photos from previous events have been used in posters, public service announcements and notecards. Organized in schools and public venues, the Living Green Ribbon brings together students, local dignitaries and community members to show their support for organ and tissue donation.
Now it is still held in other areas of Ontario but it seems that Windsor and Essex County does not recognize the need! Show them there IS a need!
We, the undersigned, wish to express the need for the Essex County region to have the Living Green Ribbon event like we used to during NOTDAW as the internationally recognized symbol of organ and tissue donation.
