On 18 February 1971/Operation Lam Son 719 WO Gerald E. Woods, part of a crew in a UH-1 (Huey) Helicopter was sent as a Special Forces extraction/rescue mission and was shot down by enemy AAA-crashing on a steep land feature.
19 Feb 1971, a rescue and recovery team was dropped in to locate and confirm survivors/deceased at the crash site. They confirmed all had been killed, placed some in body bags, and planned further recovery in the morning of Walter E. Demsey; Gary L. Johnson; George P.Berg (all missing from UH1H); Allen R. Lloyd; Ronald L. Watson (missing from Special Forces team).
Before they could complete the mission, the recovery team was forced to withdraw under heavy enemy fire leaving the deceased crew and SF personnel at the site- still there due to politics and poor prioritization of known location of remains.
The POW/MIA accounting agency knows they are there, has precise coordinates- 160431N 1071910E (YC481785), SR 71 photos, Recovery team photos, but ignores the site and leaves Families/Kin of the six soldiers in grief that loved ones are not home and interred- as promised in the phrase, "No soldier left behind."
A fallen soldier left behind and not buried in the U.S.A. is still MIA as their remains are not secure. It's time for closure!
We, the undersigned, call on the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency to immediately recover these remains and return them home as they should have forty years ago.
