As many are aware CUPE 4207 is moving towards a legal strike position. Members of this union include Instructors, Teaching Assistants, Lab Demonstrators and Marker/Graders. The university administration has not been forthcoming regarding its treatment of students in the event of a strike.
A failure by the university administration to divulge their contingency plans has contributed to a growing sense of uncertainty, raising the concern that thousands of students will not be able to complete their academic terms, and the loss of already paid tuition.
- We call on the university administration to make public their contingency plans to ensure that students do not face undue hardship as the result of any strike or lock-out.
- We call on the Senate to grant academic amnesty for the duration of any strike or lock-out to all students.
We demand that no student be penalized for the following during the course of the strike or lock out:
- Not attending classes. On or off campus.
- Not submitting academic assignments, including online submissions.
- Fines as a result of expired library materials.
- Students living in residence, and student's who have purchased parking passes be credited additional "days" if required in order to finish their academic term as the result of a strike or lock-out.
- We also ask that students be granted extensions on academic assignments, tests and exams originally scheduled for the time period immediately following the conclusion of a strike or lock-out.
