Despite their promises, casinos are not in the business of helping neighboring businesses. They're only goal is to get people inside their casino and keep them there as long as they can.
They're able to lower prices on food, shopping, and entertainment, under-cutting local competition, making up for those losses with slot revenues.
Concerns about gambling expansion act to thwart investment and expansion of Newport businesses. If gambling expansion is allowed at Newport Grand, despite decades rejecting gambling referendums, the impact on the local hospitality industry will be devastating.
For these reasons, we must appeal to our political leaders to halt the expansion of Rhode Island’s partnership with gambling interests by declining to alter any law, or to propose any change in our laws or Constitution, aimed at introducing and expanding casino gambling in Newport.
We must ask our City Councilors to implore the General Assembly by resolution not expand this toxic revenue source in a state infamous for corruption by political insiders.
