On September 28th, 2017, a student enrolled in Monroe Community College tweeted ""shoutout to the n***** at MCC who vandalized my confederate flag... you'll be a white mans property soon enough give trump time." MCC has since responded to the incident. Ann Kress, president of MCC, released this statement. "If through the review we see that there has been some sort of student code of conduct violation. But throughout this, I really want to emphasize freedom of speech is important to the college." One student, Lakisha Simms said "This student sort of kind of does the same thing, and singles out all black people and tells us basically we can go back to being slave," and expresses her dismay "to hear that he is not going to be reprimanded." Students should feel safe in their pursuit of a higher education, and MCC is not well representing that sentiment. This situation shines light on a larger problem at hand, and that is that hate incidents such as these will continue in America if not recognized and handled as what they are.
We, the undersigned, call on Monroe Community College to enforce disciplinary actions against the student enrolled at their college who tweeted "shoutout to the n***** at MCC who vandalized my confederate flag... you'll be a white mans property soon enough give trump time." We request that this student is penalized with a suspension from MCC for the hate incident that ensued on September 28th, 2017.
