Distribute Salt on Derby Road footpaths

Derby Road, from Lenton to the University of Nottingham Campus, is probably the most walked on road in Nottingham during term time, so why is there no salt put on there to prevent the thick layer of slippery ice forming during these harsh winter times.

Thousands of students stomp their way down Derby Road, to and from University, every day. They do it to stay fit, to save money, and really who can complain, its helping the environment as well. Since the heavy snowfall, which we had last week, every last flake of snow has been trodden in making a hard compact layer of ice, which has frozen in the subzero night-time temperatures, making the walk to University a treacherous and incredibly dangerous one.

I, myself, am a student who chooses to go to university by foot every day. When the snow fell, I wasn’t unprepared. Living in Montreal for a year, during one of their harshest winters, made me realise the necessity of owning good pair of hiking boots. However, even with this pair of hiking boots, I still find it an extremely frightening experience walking on Derby Road, especially on the parts with a incline.
In the Winter Service (Gritting) Update for this year, the revised priority list clearly stated that “Footways adjacent to main roads on gritting routes” and “high pedestrian foot fall” routes will be gritted since they are ”key links to services”.

Derby Road is a main route out of town and into University, and has an incredibly high foot fall. I know that buying just a tonne of salt costs £25, and distributing it also has its expenses but slipping and falling on ice is known to be one of the greatest contributors to winter accidents., so we are asking please spread some salt on this pedestrian route this winter.
