- Target:
- Rob Burton, Mayor of Oakville
- Region:
- Canada
In 2011, the Town of Oakville hosted an information session outlining their intention to build 3 new soccer fields and a parking lot within the TOTAL AREA of the existing soccer field at Aspen Forest Park. The initial plan did not include sufficient parking for the 100 vehicles associated with 3 soccer fields, and the neighbourhood is not designed to host that level of daily evening traffic from May to September.
The original plan was opposed by several members of the community, and the City agreed to review traffic patterns and redesign the plan.
On January 24, 2012 the Town of Oakville advised of a Public Open House to review its newest plan. This includes:
> A 60 car parking lot in the existing soccer field spanning from the existing goal post at the western edge to the willow tree to the east.
> The entrance to the parking lot across from 462 Aspen Forest Drive
> 2 new mini soccer fields to be built BEHIND the existing trees to the EAST of the walkway from Claremont.
> The new fields will be unlit and not visible from the road.
We, the concerned residents of this neighbourhood strongly oppose the construction of a parking lot in the existing green space. We are concerned that it does not meet the needs or concerns of our community. We feel that this proposed plan provides NO POSITIVE BENEFIT to the commmunity.
Furthermore, some of our concerns are as follows:
> Traffic volume will double from May to September to accommodate 2 soccer fields. There is increased risk of traffic fatality or injury.
> By forcing our children to play in an isolated area, it increases the risk to them from "predators" of various kinds.
> The physical appearance of the existing greenspace will be destroyed and it will have a negative effect on property values.
> The process to notify and educate the residents of the community has been inadequate and misleading.
> More suitable sites, that are within new residential areas in Oakville, may not have been considered.
> The Oakville Soccer Association does not need another mini soccer field and has not requested its creation.
MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD! DON'T LET OAKVILLE PAVE OUR NATURAL GREEN SPACES!
We, the undersigned, oppose the Town of Oakville's plan for Aspen Forest Park. It would eliminate a natural green space that is part of the green-scaping of the neighbourhood and is used by children and adults daily.
We oppose the plan that will replace this greenspace with a 60 car parking lot. We oppose the creation of 2 new soccer fields in an isolated unlit area, unseen by the general neighbourhood.
We believe it is unsafe that our children are forced to play in an isolated area. We believe the proposed plan provides no positive benefit for our community.
