The Maritime and Coastguard Agency, MCA, has submitted a plan to decimate HM Coastguard by closing Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCCs), making a handful 'daytime only' and leaving only 2 as full-time 24/7 control rooms. Contrary to their claims, this will result in a loss of resilience, lack of redundancy, loss of staff and associated local knowledge, delays in SAR response and ultimately risk lives.
Moreover, the consultation process has not followed due process. Prior to the document being published risk assessments had not been completed, thorough technology trials had not taken place and Operational Coastguards (the experts) had not been consulted.
Their proposal provides no evidence of what 'new technology' they claim to have, because there is none. They have assumed staff will be able to move to new locations and that the Coastguard Rescue Service (volunteers) will accept new responsibilities. Neither of which are true.
There are alternatives, but they are not being considered.
We call for a Judicial Review.
We, the undersigned, call upon our elected representatives to demand the proposed closures of the UK's Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCC) be abandoned and a Judicial Review be conducted.
