Don't Wing The Swing

DC Public School officials are proposing to relocate ("swing") Hyde Addison
Elementary School -- the only public elementary school in Georgetown -- to Euclid and 11th Street NW (more than three miles from its current location) for at least two years while the city renovates the school. The “swing” is a temporary location.

Many parents at the school are outraged that the site is so far away from the neighborhood.
• A suitable swing site in Georgetown is paramount to keep the school community connected. Many local families walk to school every day.
• Children as young as three would be required to endure an hour a day or more on buses simply to attend their right-to-attend neighborhood public school.
• The city has released no information on how it will ensure the safety of these
children during these long bus rides.
• The city is making the decision without consulting with local residents and with limited parent engagement – unlike its approach to Ward 3 renovations.
• NO neighborhood elementary school to date has been relocated so far from the neighborhood it serves.
• 93% of Hyde parents surveyed by the city oppose the move to Meyer
Elementary. The city is taking this step because it failed to budget for temporary
space -- even as it spends nearly a quarter of a billion dollars to renovate the
Ellington School.
