Currently, all standard light bulbs used in the University of Miami Residential Colleges are 60 watt incandescent bulbs.
Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) give off the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs but require 1/3 or less of the energy.
Replacing a 60 watt incandescent light bulb with a 15 watt CFL will save about $36.00 in electricity costs over the 10,000 hour rated life of the CFL, and reduces associated carbon dioxide emissions by over 600 pounds!
CFLs are commonly associated with a risk of mercury poisoning and/or mercury emissions, however when recycled properly, they pose no threat to the environment and the mercury in the bulbs is liquid which is not harmful to humans.
Not to mention, because they save energy, they cause less mercury to escape into the atmosphere from coal -fired power plants. (Information taken from environmentaldefense.org).
We, the undersigned, call on the University of Miami to make the switch from using incandescent light bulbs to using compact florescent light bulbs in the residential colleges to help save energy and lessen the University's impact on global warming.
The CFLs should be properly recycled to prevent excess mercury from leaking into the environment.
