Ten years ago I watched as my mum was lovingly cared for by the wonderful nursing staff in her final weeks and felt the warmth of their genuine compassion for our subsequent loss.
Last Christmas I witnessed our brave Firefighters, Police and Healthcare staff deal with the aweful devastation brought about by Australia's worst fire season in 100 years.
This year I've been overwhelmed by the dedication and sacrifice made worldwide by doctors, nurses, teachers, cleaners and other essential workers during this horrible COVID-19 pandemic.
I am enormously proud of the hard work and personal risks endured by my family and friends in Health and Aged Care nursing and in the Education sector.
Tonight I lay post-operative with regular attendance of the cheerfully thoughtful nursing staff and feel compelled to appeal for recognition of these wonderful people.
Please join me in a public outcry to petition our government to set aside their ridiculous wage freeze and instead call for improvements in the pay rates and conditions for those we now know to be truly essential to our world.
We, the undersigned call on the Australian government to set aside the wage freeze for all affected Essential Workers (as defined during the COVID-19 epidemic by the Australian government) and instead call for improvements in the pay rates and conditions for those we now know to be truly essential to the communities of Australia and the world.
