Every baby needs an echocardiogram soon after they are born (within 24 hours) this is to save babies lives to prevent babies who have been born with
Congenital Heart Defects getting extremely ill before it's detected.
Congenital Heart Defects are the most common birth defect.
Congenital Heart Defects are the number 1 cause of DEATH from a birth defect, killing twice as many children as cancer every year.
Congenital Heart Defects affects 8 out of 1000 live births, this does not count all the children lost in pregnancy to Congenital Heart Defect's.
Congenital Heart Defects are life threatening and sadly not enough is being done to detect them early.
Early detection is vital to help babies survive.
Many babies with congenital heart defects can appear healthy at birth yet it can take only a few days or even weeks later when things can dramatically change, the lucky one's are the ones who make it back to hospital in time but sadly many babies still pass away.
For the babies that make it back in time to hospital, their body has been trying extremely hard to survive and has become extremely weak this decreases the odds of them surviving open heart surgery.
Open heart surgery is vital if the baby is to survive. Sadly this can be too much for many babies whos bodies are now extremely weak.
Early detection is vital to the survival of babies born with congenital heart defects.
All babies should be checked more for congenital heart defects.
An echocardiogram is an non-invasive test. An echocardiogram is a pulse of high frequency, inaudible sound is transmitted through the skin by placing a recorder or probe on the chest wall.
The probe picks up the echoes reflected from various parts of the heart and displays them as an echocardiogram - a picture on a screen.
The recorded waves show the shape, texture and movement of the valves and the size and function of the heart muscle and chambers.
The test can take up to an hour and is painless.
It provides information about disease of the heart muscle for those who have suffered a heart attack or heart failure and to assess people with disease of the heart valves and congenital heart defects.
