At the introduction of the 2008-2009 school year, some of the Rankin County Schools have implemented a newly adopted math program structured for grades K-6 called Everyday Math.

Although new to our schools, it is not a new program and has been in use since the 1990's after it's developement in the 1980s. Unfortunately, it's methods of teaching include: Spiral technique, heavily conceptual cognitive thought, very minimal math facts critical to mastering pre-college math courses and lack of any mastering of skills to allow the students to rise to a true level of competency to promote excellence.

This new math program has proven to be inadequate and will end up hadicapping our children. The job of public schools are to prepare and educate our children. We trust them to do so with our support. Everyday Math will fail our children - in grades, esteem and mostly in their hopes for a better and brighter tomorrow.

Simply put, it does not teach our children the fundamental and basic math skills they need. Period. With this program, the vast majority of parents will be spending time teaching our children or paying someone to supplement what our tax dollars are in place to do.

By signing this petition, you are in support of the Rankin County School Board to revoke their recent decision to introduce Everyday Math into our school system.

Alarmingly, this program does not meet the 2008 National Mathematics Advisory Panel requirements of education.

Above featured web site supports this statement.

This program has negatively impacted many states within our nation and for some (TX, IL, CA) concluded to not allow the program, specifically for 3rd and 6th grades, and it was rejected.

If you feel strongly about your children becoming proficient with the mathematical skills required to succeed and meet the national standards of education, please sign this petition to let your voice be heard and pass this on to other concerned parents.
