In 2008 the New York Times reported that then Mayor Michael Bloomberg took aim at limiting parking placards for City employees. Teachers were wrongfully targeted by Mayor Bloomberg because unlike other city employees, teachers can only park in designated areas along school property between the hours of 7AM-4PM.
In 2014 The UFT lead teachers to believe they were working towards rectifying Bloombergs targeting of teacher parking but to date nothing has been done.
In 2015 The National Blue Ribbon awarded teachers of P.S.11 have to take up their own plight to secure parking to serve the children on Brooklyn.
The fact remains that while the city is in the midst of blizzards and tropical storms, while the mayor is telling citizens "those who do not have to be on the streets to not be on the streets", schools are open and the teachers of P.S.11 have to report to serve the children of Brooklyn.
The National Blue Ribbon Award winning teachers of P.S.11 provide the children of Brooklyn with the educational building blocks to secure bright and successful futures. P.S.11 currently has nearly 800 students and over 30 teachers that drive but are only allocated 14 placards.
Teachers at P.S.11 are circling the neighborhood in unsuccessful attempts to find parking to avoid being towed by the traffic agents who circle the block waiting to tow teacher cars. The teachers of P.S.11 are being denied additional parking spaces and placards while other schools in the area are allotted more space and more parking placards. Many of the teachers of P.S.11 live in Long Island, the Bronx and on the other side of Brooklyn. Many of these teachers have children who also attend P.S.11. No teacher should have to worry about getting themselves and their children home safely or their family being stranded because their car has been towed.
The teachers of P.S. 11 would like to be given back the space that borders the school on Washington Avenue that was wrongfully taken away during the Bloomberg administration which would require the Department of Transportation to increase parking placards.
We, the undersigned, call on The NYC Department of Transportation, Mayor De Blasio, UFT President Multigrew, and Chancellor Carmen Farina to increase the number of placards for National Blue Ribbon awarded teachers of P.S. 11 and teacher parking on Washington Ave.
