On October 6, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) announced a new partnership with Coca-Cola. As part of this partnership, The Coca-Cola Company is providing a grant to the AAFP to develop consumer education content on beverages and sweeteners for the AAFP website www.FamilyDoctor.org.
Coca-Cola's CEO recently stated in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal that soft drinks are entirely benign and have nothing to do with obesity. This dangerous and disingenuous statement echos tobacco industry claims that cigarettes were safe. As family doctors, it is our responsibility to speak out for the health of our patients and the ethics of our profession.
We, the undersigned family physicians strongly oppose the AAFP partnership with the Coca-Cola company. Given the well documented role of soft drink consumption in fueling the obesity epidemic among children and adults, this partnership is not in the best interest of our patients.
In addition, this partnership damages our credibility as health advocates. As an organization committed to public health, we urge AAFP to end this partnership immediately.
