Since taking on leadership at SMRT five years ago, Desmond Kuek has not improved the MRT services provided to the public. He has cited deep-seated corporate culture, something he should have made changes to after two years. His public silence on taking accountability for his ineffective leadership is a damning endorsement of incompetence at the top level of public services. He may have started with good intentions, but he is clearly now part of the problem at SMRT. Cutting his annual bonus is not the answer, not when his annual salary is close to S$2 million. It is time to remove him, let his deputy take over temporarily during the search for a more effective CEO.
