Naser Derazshamshir (Aydin Muganli), an Azerbaijani civil rights activist, is still being held in Ardabil Intelligence Service office. Even though he has been detained for more than two weeks, he has not been allowed access to a lawyer or his family, all of whom have not been told the reason for his detention.
Derazshamshir, a master's in international law graduate at Baku State University, was arrested on August 06, 2011 in the house of his parents in Jafarabad, Moghan of Ardabil province and was taken to Ardabil Intelligence Service headquarters. Derazshamshir's house was searched and his computer, books and other belongings were seized.
The Association for the Defense of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners (ADAPP), believes that; Mr. Derazshamshir is a prisoner of conscience and held solely for the peaceful civil, cultural and language rights activities.
- We call on the Iranian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Naser Derazshamshir, as he is a prisoner of conscience, held solely for his defense of the right of the Azerbaijani people in Iran to use their own language.
- We demand for Naser Derazshamshir to receive urgently needed medical care for the torture wounds inflicted by prison authorities.
- Reminding the authorities that, as a state party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Iran is obliged to uphold the right to freedom of expression and that linguistic minorities have the right to use their own language.
