We at Friends of Ashfield Memorials would like to move the new cross war memorial to its own grounds at the junction of mansfield road and unwin road ( pepper gardens ) instead of the proposed site of the three way junction of stoneyford road, priestsic road and downing street here in sutton in ashfield.
We feel that the proposed site would increase danger to drivers and promote vandalism in an area that is already plagued with under aged drinking and drug taking.
Opposite the proposed site is a complex for the older generation to live and having spoken to most of them we feel it would be unfair to increase the noise levels and appalling behaviour that would surround somewhere like the memorial for which the local gangs could meet and hang around to carry on with their drinking.
We feel that PepperGardens would be an excellent alternative site and situated next to the Gateway to Ashfield would be an excellent reminder to everyone either living, working or just visiting the area of the sacrifice our towns folk gave so that we could ave ou future.
We the undersigned call on Ashfield District Council to eliminate the proposed plan to re-site the New Cross War Memorial at the three way junction of Stoneyford road, Priestsic road and Downing street, and grant that it be rebuilt/sited in its own grounds at Pepper Gardens on the junction of Mansfield road and Unwin road, in the area known as the Gateway to Ashfield.
