Maggie Walker will be best honored at the 4 acre-Abner Clay Park, which can be transformed into a sumptuous setting for a monument to this revered Richmonder.
Rather than shoe-horn a statue of Mrs. Walker into the busy intersection at Brook Road and Broad Street, we support its location where:
• Families, students, visitors and residents can quietly contemplate and absorb Mrs. Walker’s legacy;
• Parking arrangements can be easily incorporated;
• Nearby historic sites are within easy access;
• The artist is given a more expansive setting for seating and unobstructed, panoramic viewing;
• More extensive landscaping is possible;
• Bus traffic, hazardous pedestrian conditions, and casual dining do not compete for attention;
• Costly and extensive re-working of public utilities can be avoided.
We, the undersigned, call on the Richmond Public Arts Commission and the Richmond City Planning Commission to reconsider Abner Clay Park as the site for a comprehensive memorial to Maggie Walker, which will include a monument, plaza, parking, seating, educational aids, and pathways to related historic sites in the immediate area in order to deepen the experience and magnify her legacy.
