In 1997 the GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) Act was passed in South Africa. The act lays down measures to limit the harm on the environment that can be caused by GMOs.
It establishes mechanisms to evaluate the introduction of these organisms into the market, for the reductions of associated risks and it sets up a council for GMOs.
The act also provides procedures for notification on the use of GMOs. It applies to the importation, production, releasing and distribution of all genetically modified organisms.
However, the act fails to mention food labelling, but focuses merely on the environment. The act does not make the labelling of food containing genetically modified products compulsory.
Neither does it demand international producers to indicate wheher or not the foods they are importing contain GMOs.
