Hold dismissive mental health professionals criminally responsible for patients they have failed
- Target:
- Hon Greg Hunt MP, Australian Minister for Health
- Region:
- Australia
On Friday June 9th 2018, a father experiencing psychosis brutally murdered his young son in Sydney.
This father had made multiple requests for psychiatric treatment, claiming he was hearing voices and feared for his sons safety.
The father was repeatedly turned away, with a lack of beds being given as a reason.
This family has been destroyed because of a monumental failure in our system.
We don’t turn away physical injuries because of a lack of beds, but medical professionals continue to treat patients seeking help for mental health issues like they are wasting time and seeking attention.
An entire community has been devastated, a child has lost his life, and a father has been left confused and abandoned in the prison system when he did everything he could to stop the incident unfolding.
We need to hold these professionals criminally responsible for the fallout when they deny requests for help from vulnerable patients.
No one is immune to mental health issues, and we cannot continue to fail those who ask for assistance.
We, the undersigned call on the Australian Government to hold mental health professionals criminally responsible for the actions of patients they have denied assistance to.
