In 2000 425,000 ha of State Forestry was placed into a holding tenure within the conservation act to be reclassified into various National Park status. Under old laws horses are prohibited from entering National Parks as they were considered "domestic animals". With the announcement by the government on 28.10.04 of the final re classification of the remaining tenure, Horse Riders have lost the majority of existing tracks and trails.
The government has allowed selected areas to be classified National Park Recovery and allowed riding to continue for a further 9 years only. Horse riders and organisation have been holding Consultative meetings for the past 7 years or more to have the existing fire tracks and degraded trails classified as conservation corridors.
The government has been presented numerous reports from highly qualified individuals who substantiate that horseriding is NOT detrimental to our Forests. We are united in our fight to have the government listen to the people of Queensland and not take away this recreational pursuit.
The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the threatened loss of horse riding enthusiasts' rights to ride horses in South East Queensland Forests when they are converted to their new National Park status. We strongly believe that the Community is best served by achieving a balance between conservation recreational use and community safety.
Your petitioners therefore request the House to make provision in the proposed new tenure for Forest Reserves to have some of the already existing fire trails and degraded tracks set aside as Conservation Park Corridors.
