The Housing and Redevelopment Authority helps many low income families find affordable housing, and they help revitalize neighborhoods by encouraging redevelopment of commercial property. The authority also provides assistance with rent and first time home buyers. This petition is dealing with their involvement in the condemnation and development of private property for industrial parks and use of eminent domain to profit private individuals or companies.
The HRA was set up to develop low income housing and encourage the redevelopment of rundown and substandard properties. They are going beyond their authority and abusing their power by taking property from private citizens to use for development of industrial parks. They force owners to sell by claiming eminent domain and condemning the property. According to the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution, “no person shall…be deprived of life, liberty or property, without due process of law.” It is time for us to unite for a common goal of protecting our rights to own property without fear that the government will just take it away from us.
