Hudson can be a leader in the nation by banning no-knock warrants. No-knock raids are known to cause needless injury and death of innocent people, as well as take away property without just compensation.
The Fourth Amendment protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures. The Supreme Court has ruled that police must knock and announce their presence before entering your home during a search, except in very limited circumstances. These include situations where there is an imminent risk of destruction of evidence or danger to human life, or when the police have reason to believe that announcing their presence would be dangerous.
No-knock raids are not necessary, and they are dangerous. They usually occur at night when people are sleeping; this often leads to injuries to both civilians and law enforcement officers. In addition, many times these raids are based on faulty information provided by informants who may be lying or otherwise unreliable.
Hudson is a great place to live. It's a nice, quiet city with a lot of great people and beautiful scenery. But we need to make sure that our police officers are doing their jobs in a way that protects the rights of all citizens, not just some.
