BC is suffering a major housing crisis of unaffordability & unavailability with even well-maintained, safe housing being destroyed leaving tenants vulnerable. BC communities including New Westminster BC & Prince Edward Island have already passed Moratoriums to give renters temporary relief while new buildings come on-line.
According to a Delta 2022 Housing Report, home values have increased exponentially, but household income has not kept pace. Rents have also increased with an average 1 bedroom rental now at $1500 and up per month. Vacancy rates are at near zero & many rentals building have long waiting lists. Many are spending more than 30% of income on housing.
New "affordable" rental housing takes years to build. In the meantime, good well-maintained rentals are snapped up by speculators to either renovate for higher rents or to demolish and build more dense expensive rentals.
To DELTA BC MAYOR & COUNCIL:
We ask Council to immediately implement a 2 year Moratorium on Multi-Unit Housing Renovictions & Demovictions. This would protect existing affordable housing, halt displacement of residents from their Delta homes and allow existing housing projects time to be ready for safe occupancy,
