Every child deserves a safe and equal opportunity to play.
Despite being meticulously maintained, the Sudbury Public School playgrounds are outdated and out of compliance with codes. The surfaces are not up to Massachusetts Architectural Access Board (MAAB) standards, and much of the equipment is not ADA compliant and nearing end-of-life. In order to provide a safe, accessible play environment for our children to grow and thrive, we need to do some updating.
The Playground Modernization project aims to bring our playgrounds into compliance with regulatory standards in order to insure safety and equal opportunities for children of all abilities to play, learn, and thrive.
We are seeking funding for this project from Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds. It's important to note that these funds are specifically limited and could not otherwise be used for funding teachers or education programs. For more information about CPA, please check out our website -

We, the undersigned, call on the Sudbury Public Schools School Committee and other committees in town to support the Playground Modernization Project Initiative being brought forth by the Town and Schools Facilities Director.
- Surfaces need to be updated to comply with ADA and MAAB standards for accessibility and safety. The current wood chips are not in compliance.
- Accessible paths to access and use play equipment need to be created.
- Much of the play equipment is reaching end-of-life and also needs to be updated to meet ADA requirements for accessibility.
This proposal has NO effect on the schools' operating budget. We are seeking CPA funds which can only be used for CPA eligible projects like outdoor playgrounds.
We believe that the safety of students is of utmost importance. And that every student has the civil right to equal access to the playgrounds. As the oversight committee to our children's education, your support of the Playground Modernization Project will insure the safety and equal opportunities for all of our children.
