For many years it has been standard practice to offer only twelve months of warranty on electronic goods. It has been the practice of those in the computer systems and computer system components to follow suit and therefore only offer the end user a period of twelve months of warranty.
However in the Motor industry we have seen an extension of this to five years because they realise the dependency persons have on a motor vehicle and because manufacturing processes have improved. However even though most computers just sit in one place and despite the reliance people and business place on their computer systems there has been no similar extension of the warranty period for these devices unless it is paid for.
Too often computers break down in the thirteenth month of operation just outside of the end of warranty period. And while some manufacturers have extended there manufacturers warranty others have not.
We the undersigned believe it is time for the computer manufacturing industry to recognise the reliance that people and businesses have on personal computers and that the standard warranty period should be extended to three years.
We therefore also believe that computer manufacturers need to manufacture more reliably instead of just to a thirteen month market, to facilitate this extension.
