Impark • CHOP • Penn • Campus Park and Ride
Region:
United States of America

This petition is in regards to the abrupt letter received last week notifying Campus Park and Ride's users that all operations will cease come June 28th, 2019.

Campus Park and Ride (1600 S. Warfield Street) serves countless employees of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, among others. Specifically for CHOP Employees, the 1600 S. Warfield Street lot is the ONLY readily accessible remote parking lot that allows many of us to reliably take the shuttle into our work on main campus. In recent years, close to 1 million individuals have paid the $150.00/month rate to utilize this convenient service.

This petition is asking for Impark/CHOP/Penn to provide the continued ability to offer this ONE parking option that so many rely on to take us to our place of work.

It is unreasonable to abruptly shut down this service and leave so many of us without a single sensible alternative.

Something needs to be done to offer the employees who use this service an option for when services end in June.
The efforts made by CHOP to ameliorate frustrated employees who already struggle to get to work on a daily basis are particularly unreasonable. The CHOP Employee web portal lists alternative recommendations “for your convenience” such as parking at “The Sheraton Hotel (36th and Chestnut Street)” at an advertised rate of $37/day, and ambiguous “Surface Lot Parking”, which CHOP recommends you can specifically locate “near the 76-West Entrance".

It would be ABSURD to recommend to a patient’s family visiting CHOP or Penn that they can find hospital parking “Near interstate 76”, or at a local hotel for more money per day than the cost of an entire tank of gas. So- why is it OK to present these as feasible options to your employees working to support and care for the patients and families here?

Without an affordable option such as the Campus Park & Ride service offered daily to commuting employees, we are then being asked to pay an average of $21.11 a day (using the average of parking options listed in the CHOP Employee web portal.)
If this is the alternative, then without Campus Park and Ride, we would be expected to pay a monthly average of $485.53 just to park our car for work. This is more than the average cost of a month’s groceries for a family of 3.

In the 1-3 years we’ll spend on the waiting list to pay for a parking spot that is actually near the location in which we work, we would spend approx. $5,826.36 per year to park off-site. This is more than the average person is able to pay off on their car loan in 1 year, nonetheless, in ADDITION to.

So CHOP, Penn, Campus Park and Ride, and all those who have the power to influence, we BEG you- please do not leave us behind. We are the individuals who drive because we don’t have accessible public transit close to our homes, who drive from CHOP to our second work location/job, who have nontraditional working schedules that make it easier to commute by car, or who drive so we can simply pick up our children after work, among other reasons.

Please sign to keep Campus Park & Ride or ensure for the availability of an equal alternative.

Sincerely,
Your valued employees
