The City of San Francisco is currently reviewing HOW and WHERE to dump our garbage. A billion-dollar contract will be awarded for taking the most toxic of our waste, the non-recyclable trash, to a landfill.
Keep San Francisco's Waste Stream Green is a group of concerned residents calling on the City and County of San Francisco to conduct a full environmental impact study of the different options available. It is our waste, so it's our responsibility to remove and dispose of it in the most environmentally friendly manner possible.
San Francisco, green and progressive, leads the nation in recycling and composting, but we still send 1,800 tons of trash to a landfill every day! Do you know where our non-recyclable trash goes now, and where it may go in 2015?
Since 1987 our trash has been going to the nearby Altamont Landfill located in the arid hills of the Inner Coast Range, about 50 miles from San Francisco and far removed from the rich agricultural central valley of California. Therefore, any leakage from the landfill would cause no damage to agricultural farm land. Furthermore, the Altamont landfill has the capacity to take San Francisco's trash for the next 35 to 50 years.
The S.F. Department of the Environment recently recommended that beginning in 2015, San Francisco send its non-recyclable trash 130 miles to the Ostrom Rd. Landfill in Yuba County, the poorest county in the state. Surprisingly, they made this recommendation without ever visiting this site, located amid orchards and farmland.
The current proposal has been assigned to the Budget and Finance Committee for consideration before it will go to the full Board of Supervisors for final approval.
We, the undersigned, call on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to conduct an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to study the environmental impact of the current proposal to truck 1,800 tons of our waste across the Bay Bridge to Oakland every day where it will be loaded onto trains and transported 130 miles to a landfill in agricultural Yuba County.
We ask the Supervisors to visit the proposed Yuba Ostrom Road Landfill and listen to and consider the opposition of the farmers and the residents of Wheatland, who live in the vicinity of the landfill. Details of their concerns can be found at: www.yugag.com.
