Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners use strong magnetic fields and radio waves to image the body for the purpose of medical diagnosis. Qualified MRI Technologists are required to operate these machines due to the safety risks associated with the magnetic fields and radiofrequencies used for image acquisition.
In addition, these technologists have an extensive and unique knowledge base that they use in the safe application of imaging protocols in order to achieve images of maximum diagnostic quality.
To be registered as an MRI technologist in New Zealand, Medical Imaging Technologists (historically known as radiographers or Medical Radiation Technologists) undergo specialist training, both practically and academically.
MRI trainees are currently required to complete a postgraduate diploma programme, through which they learn the necessary skills to become a competent, professional MRI technologist, including MRI-specific patient care and safety, anatomical and pathological imaging appearances and MRI physics and technology.
As a result of this extended education and clinical training, NZ MRI technologists have a strong understanding of the safety requirements for operating MRI scanners, and the skills necessary to provide high quality patient care and to produce images of maximum diagnostic standard.
The Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB) is one of sixteen New Zealand health registration authorities appointed by the Minister of Health under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003. Its primary responsibility is to protect the health and safety of the New Zealand public in the area of Medical Radiation Technology. However, the Board is currently considering removing the MRI scope of practice due to an increased demand for MRI technologists.
For the reasons outlined above, removing the MRI scope of practice and allowing lesser qualified employees to operate MRI scanners is not in the best interest of health and safety for the public.
We, the undersigned, call on the New Zealand Medical Radiation Technologists Board to keep MRI as a separate scope of practice, to ensure MRI technologists continue to have the necessary skills and education to provide a safe service to the New Zealand public.
