Early on, it was revealed that there were "no crocodiles" in Donkey Kong Country Returns, because they "didn't need to be there." This was a game meant to revive the classic DKC trilogy, in which Kremlings were the prevalent villains you loved to hate. Instead, DKCR brought us the Tiki Tak Tribe, which, while unique in its own right, were not adequate replacements for "crocodiles" in the eyes of many fans.
Kremlings were one of the few elements of the original series to reappear in all three games, in a wide variety of reptilian species. They exhibited a unique blend of personalities, ranging from sinister, to comical, to downright insane. Their leader, K. Rool, combined all of these personality traits with a bloodthirsty hate of the Kongs, as well as a penchant for adopting nifty disguises. He would stop at nothing to have their monkey heads mounted on his wall. It was always a pleasure to get to the end of a DKC game and battle K. Rool, whose fights were always accompanied by crazy twists, such as the false Kredits in the original, as well as epic background music. He quickly became a fan-favorite as a result of these boss fights.
Kremlings also contributed to the series' gameplay in a variety of ways; we have seen species that force you to bop them on the head, to avoid their sharp jaws, species who force you to roll through their soft stomach, to avoid their helmeted head, as well as even more fascinating varieties that shoot barrels for you to bounce off to cross gaps, or that chase you through a haunted rollercoaster track. The potential for new Kremling enemies speaks for itself. There is literally nothing K. Rool and the Kremlings could not do with the proper application of imagination and creativity. They could take on a futuristic theme, a Roman empire theme, a Medieval theme, a mobster theme...the list goes on and on.
As a result of their mix of charisma and gameplay possibilities, Kremlings have amassed quite a number of followers over the years. As of 1999, the Kongs have not squared off with the Kremlings in a decent game, and many fans were hoping Donkey Kong Country Returns would provide them with that chance. And although the Tikis introduce their own tropical flavor into the game, quite a few Kremling fans do not feel that the "crocodiles" should have been removed in the first place, and that the Tikis cannot hold a candle to the former glory of the Kremlings.
SPOILER ALERT:
Donkey Kong Country Returns is an utterly amazing game, even without the Kremlings. Fans of the series are hoping that Returns will spawn at least one sequel, in the vein of the original trilogy. Because this game was based heavily off of DKC1, they assume that a Returns sequel will borrow heavily from DKC2, which took place on Krocodile Isle, the Kremling homeworld. The Tikis had their time to shine and time to get beat to a pulp by the Kongs in this Returns game. As of the end of the game, the Tikis were all destroyed, along with their master. Their time in the series should come to a close right here and right now; they should not be revived and copy-pasted into the DKC2 storyline. We want to explore a Kremling homeworld, not a Tiki Isle.
If and when development for a Donkey Kong Country Returns sequel begins, we the undersigned hope that you, Retro Studios (or whichever studio may develop the game), will include the Kremlings and K. Rool in the game as the primary antagonists.
This is a request for the Kremlings to appear in a Returns sequel, NOT another Mario Sports game. Kremlings have personalities that are still enjoyed to this day, as well as endless design possibilities that can be tweaked to fit the gameplay of any videogame. Here's to hoping for a Kremling return in the near future.
We certainly feel they deserve it, and feel that they do "need to be there" for any potential sequel; we hope the great developers at Retro feel the same.
