The existence of the Philippine Congressional pork barrel or funds for projects identified or determined by members of Congress and Senate in the Philippines has become a very controversial issue.
It diverts the attention of Philippine legislators to moneymaking endeavors, instead of focusing solely on lawmaking and proposing measures to solve national problems and economic development agenda.
It creates a corruptive business system where contract opportunities are cornered and manipulated by a few contractors with the close relatives and associates of the legislators-congressmen and senators alike.
We therefore call on the general populace, in unison, and for its general welfare and interest, to move for the abolition of the Congressional pork barrel fund, including the power and rights of legislators to identify and determine where projects of whatever nature are intended for.
We call on the sensible members of Congress and the Philippine Senate to cleanse their ranks of corrupt and dishonest members by voluntarily giving up their selfish interests and refrain from making money out of their positions, which, as mandated by the Constitution are created for the enactment of laws for the common good of the whole nation.
We call on the Speaker of the House of Congress and the President of the Philippine Senate to initiate the move for the abolition of the pork barrel funds and to give up the power and privilege to identify, name and determine projects which in the end only justify their moneymaking agenda in their positions and creates opportunities for their close relatives and staff to corner and meddle in contracts for their own selfish benefits.
