Make Lake Chabot a Safe and Environmentally Responsible Community Park

Petition Background: Help Lake Chabot Safe Citizens Group restore the Emergency Vehicle Access point into Lake Chabot! East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) altered an Emergency Vehicle Access (EVA) point into an illegal, unattended park entry gate, breaking Alameda County Supervisors' Resolution #158546.
This action has put those who use the park trails and surrounding Castro Valley residents, at an increased fire risk as the end of the street does not have a turn around or hammerhead for public safety vehicles. In the event of an emergency, this could compromise the response, operations, and staging of public safety personnel & equipment.
The recent Yosemite fire, started by a person, highlights what a vital role emergency access points play in saving lives and property; EBRPD must be held accountable for the safety of those that use the park as well as its surrounding residents.
With several other access points that meet the alameda county and EBRPD safety standards within walking distance, this potential liability is not worth the risk it imposes on the community that cherishes Lake Chabot.
Action Petitioned for: We, the undersigned urge the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to keep Lake Chabot and its surrounding residents safe by upholding Alameda County Supervisors' Resolution #158546 and re-establishing the EVA only point on Grovenor Drive.
The illegal, unsupervised gate has significantly decreased safety and increased the park’s potential liability for fire and other safety issues. It has also created a loss of revenue for the park from uncollected entry fees as well as occupying park employee personnel and the Alameda Sherriff’s Department in having to respond to incidents of increased theft, traffic violations, and personal safety concerns. The park proclaims, “…A beautiful, year-round public campground, a marksmanship range, and 70 miles of hiking and riding trails make Chabot one of the District's most varied parklands.”
Help us task EBRPD to act responsibly by upholding the law, so the community can safely utilize Lake Chabot in all its’ splendor.
