In the 1960s and 1970s, the Lebanese passport could take you almost anywhere. It was considered one of the best and most powerful passports in the world.
Since the end of the civil war 1975-1990, the ranking of the Lebanese passport has been slipping. Currently, it ranks 186th out of 199 countries according to the Passport Index.
A nation's passport is a symbol not only of its presence and status on the international stage, but also a symbol of national pride and prestige.
The current ranking of the Lebanese passport does not in any way reflect the dynamic and active nature of the millions of accomplished Lebanese who proudly represent their country all over the world, and in the fields of business, finance, innovation, technology, medicine, general sciences, creative sectors and even in the local political systems of other countries where they have been naturalized.
Whereas nationals of most world nations are welcome to Lebanon with minimal or no visa requirements, Lebanese citizens can only travel to 16 nations without a visa in addition to acquiring a visa upon arrival at 32 nations only. In contrast, 150 nations require the Lebanese to go through the long and annoying process of applying for and attaining a visa before travel.
Improving the status and ranking of the Lebanese passport is the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration.
We, the undersigned, call on the Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, Mr. Gebran Bassil, to invest all his energy, connections, and capabilities to improving the ranking and power of the Lebanese passport.
We urge Minister Bassil to carry out and pursue the necessary diplomatic measures and conclude any required agreements with other states to eliminate visa requirements for Lebanese citizens.
