The St Leonard's Junction (the junction of Streatham High Road, Mitcham Lane and Tooting Bec Gardens) has been branded 'dangerous' by police. Many local residents have repeatedly expressed their concerns about safety there. There are regular traffic collisions, and numerous near misses every day. There have been several fatalities.
Of particular concern is the pedestrian crossing at the south of the junction, across Streatham High Road. Traffic comes from several directions at this point, and there is no formal break in the traffic during the traffic light sequence, to allow pedestrians to cross there safely.
Transport for London say they won't allow a break in the traffic to allow pedestrians to use the crossing safely, because they believe it would cause too much congestion. However, neither have they come forward with any alternatives.
Elsewhere in the country, junctions are being completely redesigned, for example in Poynton in Cheshire with amazing results.
We, the undersigned, call on Transport for London to prioritise pedestrians at the St Leonard's junction, and come forward with proposals to make the junction safer.
