Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate when it comes to mental health specifically Anorexia Nervosa.
Anorexia is a deadly disease. In fact, experts suggest it’s one of the most dangerous illnesses that can impact men and women.
Up to 10% of people with anorexia die within about 10 years of getting the disease, and up to 20% will die after 20 years.
Without correct medical supervision a person suffering from Anorexia can go into refeeding Syndrom.
Cardiovascular collapse can occur with refeeding of the body because it is difficult for the smaller heart muscle to handle the increase in blood volume seen with refeeding. This can result in heart failure.
The first few weeks of refeeding the body require close monitoring of the cardiovascular system by health care providers.
A treatment program made for people with anorexia can help. However here in SA we have very little help for people suffering with an Eating Disorder.
SEDS is an inpatient program at flinders medical centre however it only has 6 beds available. SEDS also provided an outpatient program called day program however this also has limited spots available.
I am wanting to start this petition as I myself have been suffering with Anorexia Nervosa for the past 16 years. I have been a patient at SEDS inpatient program close to 10 times in the past 16 years. Each time it has provided me with some for of recovery however once I am sent home I have relapsed due to the lack of support and knowing where to turn for help.
I have spent a lot of this year in the medical ward to get me medically stable but then I am sent home due to long wait list in the SEDS program and within a few weeks I relapse.
It is emotional exhausting and an unbearable feeling of hopelessness the constant cycle of being admired to medical and sent home again waiting and waiting for a bed to be available in the inpatient program. It’s no wonder so many die from this horrible Illness it gets to the point where you feel there is no help and you just let your Eating disorder take over completely.
I don’t want to die from my Anorexia I have two beautiful boys who need me. I watched a very close friend pass away due to this illness and I can’t sit back and watch it happen again l.
I am planing on writing an impact statement to the MP and praying that this petition gets lots of signatures so I can disclose the lack of help to the MP and request that more beds and other options become available for people like me.
This desiese has taken such a toll on myself, my kids and my family and friends. Something needs to change.
We need help most of us can not do it on our own in a safe manner. Please help me make the government more aware that more funding needs to be available as this is a deathly illness and to many are losing their lives due to the ongoing battle and lack of support.
