Do you agree that more democratic debate, discussion and public consultation is needed regarding the Irish State's current open borders policy?

The petition has been organised by HOME (Holistic Outlook on the Migration Emergency). We are a grassroots, non-partisan group of concerned Mayo locals, who are seeking alternative, workable solutions to the migration crisis.

The Sports Centre at the Breaffy complex is to be turned into permanent accommodation for International Protection Applicants and yet the public have not been made aware of this development which has permanent implications for the people of Breaffy, Castlebar and Mayo.

County councillors claim they have been kept in the dark and that they’ve no power to stop plans by the county management (Tom Gilligan & Kevin Kelly), who are acting on behalf of The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, rather then acting in the best interests of Mayo residents.

We, the undersigned, call on Mayo County Council to debate the following motion at their next meeting on Monday 8th May 2023:

"Having already taken in over 4,500 people, Mayo cannot cope with any more international protection applicants or beneficiaries of temporary protection until the services and resources are available to provide an adequate level of care to those currently living in the county, and to ensure that those new to the county are integrated properly into their communities".
