Update: May 26, 2013
While there have been two fatal saltwater crocodile attacks on people in the Northern Territory (NT) in the last two months of 2012, selective culling is not the public safety panacea that it may superficially appear to be.
--------------------------
April 16, 2009: The Northern Territory government are looking at a proposal to deplete numbers of the saltwater crocodile in Darwin and the surrounding area. This will be achieved through the use of 'big game' tourism.
The saltwater crocodile is the oldest surviving species in the area, a species that has existed on this land long before humans even existed. This problem can be addressed more appropriately and humanely through proper education and awareness of the animals behaviour.
We encourage you to sign the petition below to stop the culling of crocodiles in the Northern Territory
To the honourable Minister for the Environment;
Regarding crocodile cull in Northern Territory,
We are writing you to show our concern for you going ahead with the proposed crocodile cull. It is especially disturbing considering the species has just begun to regain its natural stronghold as an apex species after almost catastrophic over-hunting during the last two centuries.
We understand that the cull may bring some short term revenue but we fail to see how this will compensate for the long term decrease in eco tourism and environmental decline.
In this modern age of environmental degradation, we ask that you find an alternative more humane solution by making people more aware of the crocodiles behaviour through education. Many of the people signing this petition are frequent travellers and regard areas of the Northern Territory as one of their most important destinations.
Many others signing this petition are aware of the importance of crocodiles to the ecosystem and the healthy balance of marine populations upon which the Northern Territory, and all of us, depend.
