The UK government is planning to introduce compulsory education for 16-18 year olds in England. This petition is designed to express strong disapproval of this measure on the grounds that it represents an unacceptable infringement of civil liberties.
It seems bizarre that a person could be considered old enough to get married, have a job, rent a flat, drive a car and so forth, and yet regarded as unable to make sensible decisions about his or her career.
To the Secretary of State for Education and Skills
Alan Johnson MP
House of Commons
London SW1A 0AA
Dear Mr Johnson
We, the undersigned, wish to express our profound concern at the government’s proposals to force 16-18 year olds to attend a school or college or otherwise to receive approved training. Effectively, 17-year-olds are to be told by the government how to run their lives. We believe this is an inappropriate response to any putative shortage of skills in Britain today.
There may be arguments for encouraging those who drop out of education or training at 16 not to do so, but we do not believe it is right to resort to coercion.
Yours sincerely
