The GPA [Gaelic Players Association] has issued its members with a ballot for
strike action to withdraw from all inter-county competitions next season.
They are doing this because they are unhappy with the on-going failure of the
government and the GAA to implement sports grants for inter-county players
and want to force a resolution to the matter through strike action.
Why your support for this declaration is needed?
It is clear that there is substantial hostility among ordinary GAA members to
strike action. The chat rooms on GAA websites like An Fear Rua
(http://www.anfearrua.com/db.asp?a=topicdisplay&tid=395596) and
Hoganstand.com demonstrate that there is resentment at the GPA’s attitude
and stance on this issue.
The strength of this feeling has to be made known. The GPA has lost touch with
ordinary members. We need to send a clear signal that we, the “rank and file”,
will not tolerate our national games being held to ransom by a small percentage
of self-interested members.
This is not the GPA versus the administration of the GAA, as it is being
portrayed in the media. However, ordinary members have no representation, no
voice to express our opposition, so it has gone largely unnoticed.
What is needed?
This is not a petition, as such, more a declaration. By signing below you are
declaring your willingness to play for your county next season.
Your ability, your age, your sex don't matter. What we want to do is send a
message to the GPA that the majority of the GAA's members are opposed to
strike action and that next season's inter-county games will be played, with or
without the GPA.
For this declaration to be valid your full name and county is needed. The private
information you supply to validate this will NOT be displayed on this website.
Declare for your County
We the undersigned, ordinary GAA members (club players, volunteers,
supporters & fans, both male and female) hereby declare our loyalty to our
county and willingness to represent it in inter-county competitions in the
absence of GPA members.
We are making this declaration to demonstrate our opposition to the GPA’s call
to its members to vote in favour of strike action to withdraw from all inter-
county competitions next season.
We call on the GPA to drop the threat of strike action and to concentrate on
what it was founded to do - to improve the conditions and representation for
players, not their financial status.
