RAPE, A noun that evokes pain, anger, sadness and anxiety for many South Africans who have been directly and indirectly impacted by this unforgivable crime. The rate of sexual violence in this country is staggering and is considered to being among the worst in the world. For years rape has been an unending issue in our country and the narrative has specifically been about females having to ensure that they are not “attracting” these members of society who believe they have the right to committing these heinous crimes. This narrative is of course fundamentally flawed, because how then do we explain a rape of a defenceless child, a rape of an elderly person and a rape of a disabled member of society. As a country we need to agree that ridiculous notions such as a victims choice of attire have no bearing when it comes to rape, and that the perpetrator has always been the problem. The Ukrainian government has recently passed a law that intends on ensuring that convicted paedophiles are chemically castrated.This petition is aimed at begging our government to take similar bold steps that will assist in deterring rapists in our communities. Enough is enough, if we ourselves do not protect our own children and elderly no one else will. Our government needs to be prepared to implement stringent laws aimed at handling such acts of inhumanity or the vicious cycle of rape will continue plaguing our country. Do not wait until it is your daughter, son, sister, mother, aunt, brother, grandmother or relative to take a stand.
