Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam, observed by millions of Muslims worldwide, including many families in Oakland, NJ. It is a time of reflection, prayer, fasting, and community togetherness. One of the most symbolic aspects of Ramadan is the sighting of the crescent moon, which marks its official beginning. In many cultures, this moment is celebrated with communal gatherings and special ceremonies.
Several neighboring towns and cities across New Jersey, including in Bergen, Passaic, and Essex Counties, have established **Moon Lighting Ceremonies** to recognize the start of Ramadan. These events serve as inclusive community gatherings, similar to Christmas Tree Lighting ceremonies, allowing Muslim residents to celebrate publicly while promoting interfaith understanding and cultural appreciation.
Despite the growing Muslim population in Oakland, there is currently no public recognition of Ramadan in the borough’s community events. Implementing a Moon Lighting Ceremony would not only provide Muslim families—especially children—with a meaningful and festive way to honor this important tradition, but it would also demonstrate Oakland’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and respect for all faiths.
By adopting this initiative, Oakland would join the ranks of many towns fostering unity and representation within their communities. This event would serve as a moment of joy and connection, where residents of all backgrounds can come together and learn about an important cultural tradition.
To: The Borough of Oakland, NJ
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Borough of Oakland establish a Moon Lighting Ceremony to mark the beginning of Ramadan, much like the Christmas Tree Lighting events held in many towns.
Ramadan is a sacred and joyous time for Muslim residents, and a community event to illuminate a crescent moon symbol would provide an inclusive and meaningful way to celebrate the start of the holy month. Many surrounding towns across the county have already embraced such events, yet Oakland does not currently offer one.
A Moon Lighting Ceremony would:
- Offer Muslim families and children a way to celebrate their faith publicly and joyfully.
- Promote cultural awareness and inclusivity within the Oakland community.
- Bring residents together, fostering unity and shared celebration.
This event would be led by and cater to Muslim residents, but all community members would be welcome to attend and partake in the spirit of togetherness.
We urge the Borough of Oakland to recognize the importance of this celebration and work with the local Muslim community to establish an annual Moon Lighting Ceremony.
