On February 11, 1982, Officer James G. Carragher was shot and killed as he attempted to arrest 2 suspects that tried to rob him.
Officer Carragher had just returned home from his tour of duty, and was about 80 ft. from his home when he was approached by 2 men with guns who attempted to rob him, while a third waited in a getaway car. Officer Carragher drew his weapon and fired five shots (hitting one of his assailants), before being shot twice and killed.
It was only after, that one of the assailants, Samuel Hamilton, showed up in a local emergency room claiming HE had been the victim of a mugging and shot. Police followed a tip that Hamilton had been bragging about his role in the murder of Police Officer James G. Carragher and was arrested.
Officer Carragher had served with New York Housing Authority Police Dept. PSA1 for 16 years, and was also a WWII Navy veteran. He was a husband, father and grandfather.
Samuel Hamilton was convicted of murder and robbery and sentenced to 18 years to life in prison.
In August 2010, Samuel Hamilton will be eligibe for parole.
