UNSW management is refusing to commit to restoring job security to UNSW staff through the regulation of fixed term and casual employment.
Staff represented by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) have been negotiating with UNSW management for over 18 months, and have had to resort to industrial action in support of their claims.
Up to 40 staff members have now been stood down due to taking industrial action.
We the undersigned are concerned at the refusal of UNSW management to commit to restoring job security to UNSW staff through the regulation of fixed term and casual employment.
We note that staff represented by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) have been trying to reach agreement with UNSW management for over 18 months and have had to resort to undertaking industrial action in support of their claims for new Industrial Agreements.
We condemn UNSW management for its decision to stand down without pay those NTEU members engaged in lawful, protected industrial action in support of improved job security at UNSW.
We note that the situation at UNSW has become so dire that the NSW Legislative Council has seen fit to pass a resolution condemning UNSW for failing to conclude negotiations with the NTEU and for standing down staff without pay.
We call on UNSW management to negotiate with the NTEU to resolve this dispute. We call on the UNSW Council to direct the Vice-Chancellor to resolve this dispute immediately in order to protect UNSW from further reputational damage.
