Issues related to reproductive choices disproportionately affect the lives of people in historically marginalized communities, such as women, people of color, and the economically disadvantaged.
As a Catholic, Jesuit institution, Georgetown University claims to advocate on behalf of these communities and commit itself to the principles of social justice and a free exchange of ideas. By limiting dialogue, access to information, and resources concerning sexual health, Georgetown fails to live up to its professed mission and endangers the lives of students on campus.
We, the undersigned, are a coalition of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents seeking to alter Georgetown’s policies regarding reproductive justice so that they more genuinely reflect the needs and realities of its students. Our voices and concerns surrounding these issues have consistently been silenced. The University can no longer deny the need for reproductive justice on its campus.
Georgetown must take the following steps in order to be in accordance with its ideals and respect the rights and needs of all of its students. We demand:
1) Access to Material Resources: condoms and rape kits must be available on campus. The HPV vaccine and birth control must be covered under Georgetown’s insurance plan and be available on campus without barriers to access.
2) Access to Informational Resources: comprehensive sex education must be available on campus. Health workers must be able to explicitly discuss all possible options with concerned students.
3) Free Speech and Open Dialogue: student groups with access to benefits should be allowed to hold explicitly pro-choice views.
As members of the Georgetown community, we expect the University administration to change its harmful policies and provide all students with access to the resources they need to live healthy lives and engage in thoughtful discourse.
