I am requesting that The Honorable Judge O’Donnell release Scott Leland from prison. He is a husband, a father, a son, a brother, & a friend who is known for doing whatever it takes to help others. He has volunteered his time in the community as well as at local schools. In September 2012, Scott Leland made a horrible mistake that he will regret the rest of his life. His decision to drink & drive has negatively effected so many people. In August 2013 Scott was sentenced to prison. During the past 3 years in prison Scott has participated in several programs and participated in community service opportunities. Scott held a job in prison and had excellent reviews from his employer. Scott has used his time wisely & made an effort to become a better person.
Recently, Scott qualified for release based on House a Bill 86 signed by Governor Kasich which allows inmates that have served 80% of their sentence of a year or more an opportunity to qualify for release. There are certain requirements which included but not limited to having no warrants/disclaimers, be considered a level 1 security, have no disciplinary history, and participation in certain programs. Scott has met these requirements as well as others. If Judge O’Donnell chooses to review Scott’s case he could be released as early as November 6, 2016 instead of his final release date of April 30, 2017.
It has become urgent for Scott to come home to his family that needs him. During the past year, Scott’s father, Richard Leland, has been fighting a very aggressive cancer. He had multiple surgeries and been through chemotherapy. Unfortunately the cancer has grown & spread. On September 11, 2016, the doctor informed family members that Richard Leland only has 2-6 months to live at the most.
If Scott is granted release from prison, Scott's family would have the opportunity to have Scott home for emotional support during these tough times. Scott's parents would like their son to be able to say goodbye to his dad. *Update* Richard Leland passed away on September 28, 2016. Scott & his family would like an opportunity to grieve together.
There is an opportunity here to start over and begin healing. Scott has a stable job at Kenco Electric that he will go back to when he comes home. He has a large support system made up of family, friends and colleagues. He plans to make better choices in the future.
We, the undersigned, ask that The Honorable Judge O'Donnell grant Scott Leland his 80% release. We feel Scott Leland is a good candidate for release based on the fact that he met all of the 80% requirements, received approval from the 80% 3 person panel and the fact that his father's health is quickly deteriorating. Also taking in consideration Scott's lack of criminal history, his participation in programs above and beyond that required of him, as well as his accumulation of community service hours. He has a strong support system which includes a reliable job. After serving 3 years for a crime he is truly sorry for, it is time to allow him to rejoin society.
