Recently there has been a new order published that requires rank and PME completion to obtain certain belts within the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. MCO 1500.59A states that you must be at least a Corporal with rank appropriate distance or resident PME prior to obtaining a brown belt and at least Sergeant with Rank appropriate distance or resident PME for black belt. This petition is to show support that rank should not be a prerequisite to further a Marines career or progression. Certain Military Occupation Specialties take much more time to earn the rank of Cpl or Sgt compared to other MOS. We, as Marines, are a fighting force and we should not have a limit to our training that could impact our performance in battle. Two common sayings, Sergeants are the backbone of the Marine Corps and Lance Corporals win wars. Junior enlisted should have every available opportunity to prepare for that.
We, as Marines, very respectfully request to the Commandant of the Marine Corps to remove the rank prerequisites in obtaining brown and black belts in mcmap or at least allow waivers endorsed by the Commanding Officer.
