Homeowners, we think we own our land because we are diligent and pay taxes annually. We believe in our own personal rights to our land and what we do with it. Such as buying or building a shed. City and designated officials get to choose how we use our personal land with easements. My personal experience is with Hooper City. Everyone has shed, no big deal. Apparently, property easements get to dictate how you use your land, and yes even where you can place a shed on your personal land. Come to find out, easements on my property take up 39% (0.11 acres) of my 0.28-acre lot. Why is no one forthcoming about these restrictions until homeowners choose to do something with that land? Because each city wants the revenue dollars from property taxes and are not upfront about the land use restrictions. Easements are set in place to allow certain people access to our land, but in fact it's just another way the governments have got around the Fifth Amendment right of Eminent Domain which REQUIRES "just compensation" for private property taken for public use. Easements are deceiving lies that the cities and governments do not want you to know about. It should be nontaxable, or we should be getting compensation for each square foot of easement placed on our land. Please sign the petition, contact your city, and see what percentage of your property fall under easements, and then appeal your latest County tax assessment. Each person can appeal up to your last 4 years of evaluation and taxes. Everyone has easements on their property, find out what how much of your land is being controlled by the city and get your hard-earned money back.
Homeowners stop paying outrageous property taxes for land we think we own. Please sign the petition, contact your city, and see what percentage of your property fall under easements, and then appeal your latest County tax assessment. Easements on our personal land should be nontaxable and violates our Constitutional Right of Eminent Domain. We should only pay for land we truly own.
